History
A steering committee was formed in 1988 to respond to the concern of the lack of quality respite services, especially in times of family crises, as parents, carers and professional people struggled to meet the needs of family and community members with disabilities.
After an enormous amount of hard work by community members, CRCA was established and in 1990 the first project “Kalkiah” was opened. Kalkiah is a centre-based respite care facility at 241 Rockonia Road, North Rockhampton.
Kalkiah was built on land donated by the Rockhampton City Council and the building was funded through the State Government’s Housing Accommodation Assistance Scheme. Recurrent funding for operational purposes was originally through the Federal Department of Community Service and Health until 1992 when the funding responsibility was transferred to the States. Funding is now through Disability Services.
In 1995 following surveys of the community, the Association established that there was a huge unmet need for support services in the community, other than centre-based respite. The Association moved to include the provision of supported accommodation in the Association’s objectives.
In 1999 the Accommodation Support Service was established. With appropriate support, clients who have obtained individualized funding through Disability Services have been able to live in their own home or home of their choice and access a variety of experiences, activities and relationships within the community.
In July 2001 Home and Community Care (HACC) commenced funding the In-Home Service. This service provides a flexible response to children and adults with moderate to severe disabilities up to the age of 65 years and their carers, in their own homes.
